CAMPAIGNS
There are numerous ocean campaigns each year in South Africa and elsewhere. The Ocean Advocate is partnering with some of them and is highlighting others. These campaigns involve heartfelt efforts to protect the ocean and, by putting the spotlight on some of them, the hope is that they'll garner more support and that people who are keen to get involved will find projects that resonate with them. International African Penguin Awareness Day is on Saturday, 12 October. There will be big waddles in Simon's Town and Durban and more are signing up. It will also be international, with the likes of the Florida Aquarium preparing to go big. African penguins are engangered and soon to be listed as critically endangered. By raising awareness, the government is encouraged to protect them better and stop their extinction in the wild by 2035. Supporters can join big waddles or hold their own at home, at a sports club, on the beach - just remember to wear black and white, print a placard, take pictures, post them to social media and tag #NotOnOurWatch.
